Ever hear of the term Supplier Diversity? No, well its really something you should know, especially if you are a diverse business owner. Supplier Diversity is a term used to describe a corporate program that encourages or requires the purchasing of services and goods from minority owned, women owned, veteran owned, LGBT-owned, service disabled veteran owned, and historically underutilized business. If you are a business owner reading this, you may fall into one of these categories.
Diverse business growth is booming. According to the National Minority Supplier Development Council, diverse business owners generated over $400 billion dollars in annual revenue and employ, either directly or indirectly more than 2.2 million people; and corporate America is taking notice. Many large corporations have either incorporated or adopted corporate Supplier Diversity programs that diverse business owners should be taking advantage of. If you’re looking for a way to gain access to GM’s supply chain or getting your product on Target’s shelves and you fit the diversity description, apply to become a vendor through the organization’s supplier diversity program.Keep in mind, some company’s may require certifications or require you to be a “certified diverse supplier”. You can achieve this by researching which certification the company requires and applying through that certification agency.
So, there you have it. If you fit into any of the categories above and own a business it’s time to jump in and take advantage of this opportunity. There are large corporations out there looking to do business with you; all you need to do is take the leap!
